Project: Portland Airport Deicing System Runway HDD
Product: 3800 ft. of 1ea. 24" & 1- 6" fusable C900 PVC pipes (27" & 7" O.D.)
General Contractor: Northwest Underwater Construction / J E Dunn Construction / Port of Portland
Soil conditions: Top 30ft. Clay /Sand / Silts, very wet, soft & unstable. ( This area was cased with 160' of 48" steel on the entrance) From 30' to 80' deep, the majority of the bore was a medium dense silt / ultra fine material.
Project Challanges: Very high water table & soft soils in the top 30' on both ends of the bore. Below 30', for the majority of the bore we encountered a very high pecentage of silts/Ultra fine materials. These materials proved very difficult to remove the solids from, and had to be hauled off and replaced with new drilling fluid to complete the bore. The bore was designed with a 2000 ft. raduis & 75' of cover & a 2000 ft. radius right hand turn was added to the last 700 ft. to line up with the product line layout area better.
The Digitrak SST magnetic steering system was used because it would have been very difficult to lay out tru tracker wires for the steering grid system. The SST steering system worked well.
Project: Portland Airport Deicing system project. 30" HDPE outfall into the Columbia River
Product: 1100 ft. of SDR 9 30" HDPE pipe
General Contractor: Northwest Underwater Construction
Soil Conditions: Soft Clay & Sand
Project challanges: High Winds at exit barge locations on river / Preventing drilling fluid frac out in soft soil conditions / Minimizing the drilling fluid / cuttings into the Columbia River.
Lifting drill head in 50ft. of water with crane barge
After tooling change Lower 34" reamer down for preream
Project: Rainier Effluent Outfall Project / Bore from Rainier Treatment Plant to the Defuser location 150 ft. off shore in 45ft. of water
General Contractor: Stellar J Corporation
Product: 750ft. 24" HDPE PIPE Conditions: Sand / silty sand
After pulling the pipe & the reamer back to the exit point in the river, the pipe would still not pull back easy. Divers went down to inspect and found the Reamer and first two drill rods wrapped in 1 1/2" cable. The divers cut the cable to free the Reamer & pipe
We think the cable was from on old existing Mill site or an ancor cable from past dredging operations in the area.
On the secound pull back, the divers inspected the pipe and reamer for more cable before it entered the ground.
